At CB Plumbing & Heating, we understand that plumbing can be frustrating for many homeowners. From leaky pipes to clogged drains, it can disrupt your daily routine and cause potentially expensive damage to your home.

Let’s address some of the most frequently asked questions about plumbing. With our help, you will understand some of the more common issues and how to deal with or prevent them.

How Do I Stop My Drains From Getting Clogged?

To prevent clogged drains, avoid pouring substances such as grease, oil, or coffee grounds down the sink. Use drain strainers to catch hair and other detritus, and regularly flush drains with hot water.

Regular maintenance is an important preventative measure. This is because it removes the accumulated debris from your drain, helping to prevent clogs altogether.

Many use bleach to clean their drains of built-up grime. This does work. However, it also corrodes the drain itself. You should only use bleach to clear out a drain as a last resort. Otherwise, you could find yourself destroying the drains you were trying to maintain.

What Should I Do In Case Of A Plumbing Emergency?

If you are dealing with a plumbing emergency, then there is one thing you must do first.

Shut off the water. This will prevent water from moving into your pipes altogether, pausing the issue until a plumber arrives to fix it.

You can turn off the water mains by turning the water control valve, otherwise known as a ‘stopcock’.

You will usually find these devices underneath a sink inside your home. However, this is not a hard rule and many are elsewhere in the home or entirely outside it.

If you do not know where your water control valve is, then you should find out as soon as possible. The longer you have to spend looking for it during an emergency, the greater the water damage you may suffer.

What Should I Do About A Leaky Tap?

First, try to tighten up any valves or bolts that may have come loose over time.

Second, check to see if there are any components of the tap that appear faulty. Should you find any, you may be able to fix the problem yourself, if you’re willing to get your hands dirty. You can likely order replacements and tighten valves yourself. After which, check that the tap is no longer leaking.

If this does not work, then you likely need to get professional plumbing services. A leaky tap isn’t just annoying. It wastes water over time and drives up your energy bills.

How do I Prevent Frozen Pipes In Winter?

Make sure that any pipes exposed to the elements are properly insulated.

Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses.

Keep your home properly heated in the winter. This adds extra heat to fight the cold and keeps the water in your heating system flowing. Static water freezes fast and easily, so even keeping your heating system on for a few hours a day can help prevent frozen pipes.

What Should I Do If My Toilet Keeps Running?

A running toilet is often caused by a faulty flapper or fill valve. Look over the chain/lever/flush button and its connecting levers for anything out of sorts. If you notice anything that has become dislodged or broken, then you’ve likely found your culprit. These segments may be able to be snapped back into place, or you may need to order a replacement part.

If you cannot find the source of the issue, or if you replace a part and the issue persists, then it’s time to call in plumbing professionals.
